What is Family Medicine (Family Practice)?

Family Medicine is a medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care to people of all ages. It is a primary care medical specialty along with obstetrics-gynecology and pediatrics. Family Medicine physicians frequently treat the entire family from the children to the parents and grandparents.

Who Do Family Medicine Physicians Treat?

Family physicians are board certified to treat patients of all ages from infants to elderly patients. Family physicians are also trained to treat female medical issues including prenatal care, gynecology-obstetrics, and family planning (birth control).

What is the difference between Family Medicine and General Practice?

Physicians who are board certified in Family Medicine complete a rigorous 3 year residency following the completion of their medical school training. General practice physician complete a 1 year internship following medical school.  Even though both Family Medicine physicians and General Practice physicians may treat patients for similar problems, Family Medicine physicians are required to pass a board certification which must be renewed.  Board certifications are only renewed through completing medical education conferences, reading up-to-date medical journals, and testing.

Which Board Certifies Family Medicine Physicians?

American Board of Family Medicine.

Physician who have board certification can be found on the website:   www.theabfm.org

Phone: (888) 995-5700

What Kind of Training is Involved in a Family Medicine Residency?

Residency training includes rotations in internal medicine (cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology), dermatology, pediatrics, newborn nursery, obstetrics-gynecology, psychiatry, and geriatrics.

Do Family Practice Physicians only work in Family Practice Clinics?

Because family practice physicians are trained in comprehensive medical care, frequently you will find family practice physicians working in: private medical offices, urgent care clinics, walk-in clinics, emergency rooms, in-hospital patient care, etc.

Are All the Physicians on your staff Board Certified in Family Medicine?
